Edinburgh 1910 World Missionary Conference

참고: What kind of an amazing mission conference in 1910 would be commemorated by four global conferences in 2010? Mission Frontiers, January-February 2009. USCWM.

1. 배경

 William Carey가 1810년 Cape Town에서 선교단체 대의원 모임 제안했으나 무산.

 1900년, 교단들 주도의 Ecumenical Mission Conference, Carnegie Hall, New York. 대중집회 성격으로 연인원 20만 명 회집.

 학생자원운동(SVM) 지도자 John R. Mott 중국 선교사 모임(1905년) & 인도 선교사 모임(1907년) 참석 후 1910년 선교대회의 방향을 사역자 및 실무자 중심의 strategic working conference로 급선회하기로 결정하고 주제별 study commissions 결성하여 책자 발간. (R. Winter, “Parachurch or paramission?”)

 1910년 제1차 Edinburgh 세계선교대회: 162 선교단체를 대표하는 천여 선교지도자(대부분 SVM 출신) 참석. 그러나 비서구 선교단체를 대표하는 참석자 부재. (이미 인도에서 두 선교단체를 설립한 Bishop Azariah는 영국CMS 총대로 참석.)

 1980년 제2차 대회에는 47%에 해당하는 참석자가 비서구 선교단체를 대표해서 참석했고, 2010년 제3차 대회는 2/3가 비서구 참석자일 것으로 예상.

 신학논쟁 (예: 세례/침례 방식) 배제

 사전 연구 및 기획에 투자

 선교전문지 International Review of Missions 발간

 개신교 선교계 연합의 가시적 성취

 역사상 (당시까지) 가장 많고 다양한 기독교 집단들이 국제회의로 모인 기록

2010년 4대 선교대회: Organizers met in Boston in November 2008 for mutual support and cooperation.

1. The Global Mission Consultation & Celebration, May 11-15, Tokyo (www.Tokyo2010.org)

 Theme: Celebrating the Past, Embracing the Future

 Vision Statement: Making Disciples of Every People in Our Generation

 개인이 아닌 선교단체 총대들 모임: Consultation of mission executives and leaders

 Sponsors: 동경 지역교회연합 (host), Asian Missions Association, 북미주 IFMA (현 CrossGlobal Link), Global Network of Mission Structures, Third World Mission Association, plus other national level mission associations.

2. Edinburgh 2010, June 2-6, Edinburgh (www.edinburgh2010.org)

 Theme: “Witnessing to Christ Today.” 연관된 소주제들을 집중적으로 연구하고 반추하는 모임.

 예상 참석자: 1,200 Christian leaders

 참여: Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, Evangelical, Pentecostal, Independent Churches in partnership with New College at the University of Edinburgh.

3. The Third Lausanne Congress on World Evangelization, Oct. 16-25, Cape Town (www.lausanne.org)

 Mission statement (since 1974): “The whole Church taking the whole Gospel to the whole World.”

 Issue-driven. Issues related to world evangelization: The Arts, Bible Engagement (Forum of Bible Agencies International), Bioethics, Business as Mission, Church Planting and Development, Church/Para-Church Relationships, Contextualization, Counseling as Mission, Education, Ethnicity and Diversity, Evangelism Training, Globalization, Holistic Mission, Leadership Development, Local Church in Mission, Majority World Church, Media and Technology, Partnership and Collaboration, Persecuted Church, Prayer, Radio in Mission, Reconciliation, Religious Nationalism, Research, Resources for Mission, Simple Living, Spiritual Warfare, Strategy, Tentmaking, Theology, Women and Men Together in Ministry (Alliance 2:29), Women in Evangelism

 Theme: “The Changing Contours of World Mission and Christianity”

 참석자: Seminary students and faculty 중심

 Sponsor: Boston Theological Institute (BTI)

 2010 선교대회들(“Edinburgh Conferences”)에 대한 분석과 정리: Edinburgh 1910 직후에도 Boston에서 유사한 모임이 있었다.

Six issues of LCWE 2010

1) The uniqueness of Christ in a pluralistic world

2) Religious fundamentalism

3) Obstacles to world evangelization within the church

4) The shift within the world church from the Global North to South and West to East

5) The development of a theology of suffering and reconciliation

6) The building of new partnerships to help the church advance in the unfinished task of world evangelization.
